Products are one of the most important parts of a whop - they determine how people access a whop. They can be either free or paid, which allows creators to monetize their platform.
Of course, setting the price of a product is crucial when monetizing a whop. This is why we wanted to share a guide on how you can set the price of a whop product and change the prices of existing products. Let's get started.
What are Whop Products?
To understand what products are, let’s remember what Whop apps are so it will be much easier to understand. Apps on Whop are features that you can add to a whop to add new functionalities to it. When you first create a whop, it will be a clean slate – there will be nothing for people to interact with. As you add apps to it, like the Courses app, for example, it will start to become a platform that people can actually use.
Almost all apps on Whop have two access types: Free and Paid/Private. You choose the one you want. Selecting the free option will make the app available for everyone on the internet. This is ideal for creating unmonetized public communities and platforms. Selecting the paid/private option, on the other hand, will allow you to gate the app with a product. After you add a couple of apps and create some products, you can link them to each other so that only the users who obtained that product can access the app.
Since products on Whop can be free, paid, private, waitlisted, or a combination, you’ll have greater control over who accesses an app and how. Paid products can be set to single payments or subscriptions, they can be waitlisted so that even if someone buys the product, they will have to wait for you to approve them. As you can see, products are highly customizable, and you can create a monetization plan that fits your platform.
So, let’s see how you can create a product on your whop and set its price.
Setting the Price of a Whop Product
The third step in creating a paid product is where you decide the price of it. Of course, you can change the price any time you want.
Creating products on whop is free, and you can create as many as you want. You should keep in mind that only owners and admins of a whop can create and edit products.
If you don’t have any products yet, let’s take a look at how you can create a paid product and set its price. First, let’s click on the Products button under the Admin Area of your whop to navigate to the products section.
Once you’re in the Products section of your whop, you’ll be prompted to create a product. If you have a product, it will be listed there, if not, you can use the Create Product button to start the process.
Once you click the Create Product button, you’ll see a popup window appear on your screen. It has a few steps, so let’s go over each.
The first step is where you select whether you want the product to be Free or Paid. Since you’re looking to set the price of a product, you should select the Paid option and then click the Continue button to proceed.
In the next step, payment frequency, you should select whether your product will be a subscription or a single payment. Each has different settings, so let’s take a look at the subscription option first.
Creating a subscription product
After selecting the subscription option and clicking Continue, you’ll see a couple of settings. First, you should set the price of the subscription. Then, select its subscription period. There are a couple of default options you can choose from, but you can set a custom day period as well. After that, you can select whether you want the product to include a free trial, an initial fee, and a waitlist by clicking on the checkboxes. Once you’re done, click Continue to proceed.
Creating a one-time payment product
Now that we’ve covered the subscription option, let’s take a look at single payment. After selecting the single payment option and clicking Continue, you’ll see three settings. The first one is, just like a subscription, is the price.
After you enter a price, you can select if you want the product to expire after a period, which can be custom as well. Then, the last setting you can toggle on or off is the waitlist option, which will put the users who obtain the product in a waitlist so you can approve them later on. Once you’re done, click the Continue button to proceed.
Paid product visibility
The last step in creating a paid product is choosing its visibility. You have three options here, so let’s explain each one:
- Visible (public): Selecting this option will make the product available for everyone on the internet.
- Hidden (secret link): Selecting this option will make the product only accessible with a private link, which you can copy from the product page.
- Hidden (password): Selecting this option will display an input box where a password is needed. This will be the password that Whop will prompt users to enter upon trying to obtain the product.
After you select the visibility option that suits you, click the Continue button to finish the process of creating a product.
Adjusting the Price of an Existing Product
Now that you have a product to go, let’s see how you can change its price with just a few steps. First, let’s click on the Products button under the Admin Area of your whop to view the products section of it.
Once you’re in the Products section of your whop, you’ll see a list of the products you’ve created so far. If you don’t have any products, the list will be empty and you’ll be prompted to create a product – which you can do so by clicking on the Create Product button.
If you do have a product, let’s click on it in the list to open its details.
When you click on the product, you’ll be directed to its details page where you can find its pricing options and linked apps. If you haven’t added a second pricing option and just followed the steps of creating a product you will find a single pricing option.
Let’s click on the pricing option to see its settings, including its price.
Once you click on the pricing option, you’ll see a new window sliding in through the right. There, you can see settings like product type (subscription, single payment, and free), price, expiry setting, immediate or waitlisted access, visibility, and more.
You can change the price of this specific pricing option of the product by editing the price input box. Once you’re done, click the Update Price button on the bottom right of your screen.
That’s it! Changing the price of an existing product is as simple as that. Now, let’s take a look at how you can add a new pricing option to the product so that you can offer alternative methods to customers.
Adding New Pricing Options to Products
While you’re on the products section of your whop (which you can navigate to by clicking on the Products button on the left side of your screen, under the Admin Area), click on the product that you want to add a new pricing option to. This will take you to the details page of the product.
Once you’re in the details page of the product, click on the Create Pricing Option button on the top right of the pricing options list to open up the popup.
When you click the Create Pricing Option button, you’ll see the option creation popup, which has some of the same steps as creating a product. Since the example pricing option for our test product has a single payment of $5, let’s create a subscription option for $2:
- Select the type of pricing option you want. Since we want to create a paid subscription, let’s select Paid for this example. Once you’ve selected the type, click the Continue button at the bottom right.
- In this step, you should select the payment frequency of the pricing option. In the case of our example, the product already has a single payment pricing option, so let’s select Subscription and click the Continue button to proceed.
- In the subscription options step, you’re going to enter the subscription price, select the subscription period, which can be customized, and toggle the options of the free trial, initial fee, and waitlist. Once you’re done, click the Continue button to proceed.
- In the last step, you should select whether you want this pricing option to be visible to everyone on the internet, hidden with a secret link, or hidden with a special password. After selecting the option that fits your plan, click Continue to finish the process.
After you’re done creating the new pricing option, you can see it under the Pricing Options list on the product details page.
